In the rental garden bedding annuals are clearly out. The choice of tree
types is fairly wide, due to their (usually) deep root system and thus
resistance to drying out. By and large though it is best to choose tree
species adapted to the local climate, and for most of Australia that means
drought hardy. One caution is that you may wish to avoid deciduous trees
because of their leaf drop, which creates another unnecessary task for
the tenant.
Further,
your selection should contain some 'specimen trees'. That is, trees that
are spectacular year round, and thus will enhance the appearance of your
property in whatever season prospective tenants visit.
Examples
are:
The native frangipani (Hymenosporum flavum ), with its shiny
leaves, angular branches and fragrant flowers in spring.
Golden Shower (Cassia fistula). Bright green shiny leaves,
large clusters of summer flowers. (Not suitable for areas of bad frost).
African Tulip (Spanthodium campanulata) Spreading canopy with
red orange flowers (not suitable near wet bushland or rainforest as
it becomes a weed).
Weeping Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) with its pendulous branches
and pyramidal shape.
Brush Box (Tristania conferta: Variegated): Long showy yellow
and green leaves. (Only suitable for wetter areas)
